Hasani is that boy who walks around the school in short quick steps as if he's already late for a critical meeting/ appointment somewhere. He has that sense of urgency with him. While everyone is still busy writing their lines, his hand is shot up indicating he's already finished. He is the first one to walk out of an exam room, or collect an assignment. If you want something done quickly and urgently, he's the guy.

Of course, it makes sense when you realize that he is the only boy in a family of four children. His father left the family when Hasani was only a little boy, and since then, he's had to step up and fill the role left by his father. His mother, not having any formal education, picks up day-jobs around the village to support her family, and Hasani is her right-hand man.

He now lives as a boarding school student here at New Life Foundation. He shows aptitude in his classes and aspires to become a doctor in future and help his family.

Baraka (meaning "Blessing" in English) is one of our most active students in second grade here at Fountain of Hope Primary School. You can find him making laps around the school during breaks and occasionally, speeding down the corridor on his way to or from the bathroom. For a 9-year-old who never knew his father and lives solely with his mother, he seems to be enjoying life quite well here at New Life Foundation. He is such a joy to have around. Baraka comes from Monduli, a popular Maasai settlement area in northern Tanzania, his mother supports him and his sibling through picking up petty jobs around the community.

It is no surprise that he's favourite sport is football and sprinting, although it comes with a little surprise that he would aspire to become to a soldier.

For an 8-year-old, Musa (Swahili for Moses) has had to endure more than his fair share of family issues. He is the first-born in a family of two children. From an early age, Musa realized that he had become the father of the family when his mother became mentally ill and lost her ability to recognize people - sometimes even her own children. Soon after father took off, leaving Musa at the hands of his grandmother along with his little sibling.

The elderly woman supports her grandchildren and her mentally ill daughter by selling food items at a local market. Once in a while, good Samaritans from her community would drop by her house with small gifts and monetary support. However, she hardly makes enough to support her grandchildren and their mother.

Musa arrived at Fountain of Hope Primary School earlier this year through an outreach program for needy children. He has settled well in our community and lifestyle here at New Life Foundation, especially excelling in mathematics in the second grade. He wants to become a pilot and travel the world!

Andrea can't tell you much about his parents. He remembers, vaguely, a few memories when his mother would strap him on her back with a "Kitenge" as she ran errants at the market-places and around the village. "Kitenge" or "Khanga" is a traditional East African cotton fabric used for women clothing. Andrea must have been 5 years old when his mother took off at the first light of dawn leaving him at the hands of her elderly mother. Andrea has been raised by her maternal grandmother ever-since, with neither word from the mother nor the father. His grandmother is now weak and can hardly support herself, she is a regular at a local market in Monduli area where she resides, usually selling firewoods and plant parts as local medicine.

Andrea however, is almost always in joyful. You can find him kicking the ball around with his friends in the field or scribbling at a blackboard after class hours. He aspires to become a teacher when he grows up. He likes red color (you will usually spot him wearing his favourite red jersey while playing football).

Debora is the first-born in a family of two. She doesn't know her father. She lives with her mother, who spends almost her entire day picking up whatever job she can find to support her daughters. Her mother doesn't have formal education, leaving her income soley at the mercy of whoever might take pity on her offer her a day job. To make ends meet, she sells food items such as vegetables, carrots, tomatoes during market days and at other times, sell them door to door. Debora and her family reside in Monduli, a popular Maasai settlement in Arusha.

Debora aspires to be a doctor when gets older, and help her mother and her younger sibling. When she is doing her school chores or studying, you can find her playing "Rede" with friends. "Rede" is a popular children's sport here in Tanzania, especially with girls where one has to avoid getting hit by a soft ball.

Eligibo is the second child in a family of three children. He lives in Chekereni village with both of his parents who are farmers. Small scale farming is the only income the family has - barely enough to provide the basic needs of the family. Funds for a good education isn't in the family budget but now Eligibo has that chance. Eligibo likes to play football. When he grows up he wants to be a train driver.

His father does not have a permanent job; he assists builders whenever he gets an opportunity. His mother was one of the care givers at New Life Foundation but for now she babysits some people's children at her home.

Loserian comes from Maasai tribe. He lives with both parents and there are three children in his family. He is the first born and his parents engage in pastoralism just like all Maasai.The family's income is not sufficient to cater for their basic needs and education. Graciana is the firstborn to her mentally ill mother. Her mother has been suffering from mental illness since she was born. She lives with her grandmother, mother, and little brother. Their grandmother is old and has a mentally challenged daughter who needs supervision all the time and is unable to earn a proper living and care for her family. Graciana has never known her father, since she is a result of a traumatic experience, a non-consensual act that her mother went trough. Unfortunately, poverty and sickness have been her company for as long as she can remember.
This information reached the New Life Foundation from the KCMC doctors who conducted a house visit to one of their patients who was their neighbor. Having seen Graciana and her sibling’s condition with that of their mother and grandmother, they decided to call NLF and inform them about their situation.
Since then, her life has never been the same. She has started to forget all the hardships she was forced through at a very young age and is optimistic about the future. She connects easily with her friends and gets her smile back. She has a bright future ahead of her and we are happy God chose us to be a part of her process.

Angel never knew her father. Her mother got pregnant while in school and as a result, she was subsequently expelled. She gave birth to Angel in her parent’s house in Monduli, Arusha, northern Tanzania (a popular Maasai settlement area). Shortly afterward she was taken into marriage with another man (who also objected to raising Angel as a stepdaughter). Angel’s mother left the little girl under the care of her maternal grandmother and went on to start another family.

Angel now lives with her maternal grandmother, who is also currently a widow with 8 children. She does not have any formal education and relies on day jobs and her little livestock to support her huge family. She finds it difficult to support Angel’s education as well as support her family with the little income that she earns. She hopes that New Life Foundation can assist her with sponsorship

Blessing is the second child in a family of four children. His parents are both primary school teachers in a government school. They live in Mailisita-Moshi, a little close to our organization’s headquarters. His parents do not earn enough to give all their children quality education. They hope that their children would one day make something of themselves and break their family’s cycle of poverty.

Blessing is a very focused child, always aiming for his goals. His teachers say that he is very active and loves to play a lot. He wants to become a pilot and he knows he will have to study very hard to become one. In his free time, he likes to play football with his friends.

Ebenezer is the only child of his parents. His parents are both petty farmers growing and selling vegetables in the market. They live here in Moshi, but in a very hard situation. His parents adore their son but unfortunately, they cannot give him the quality education he deserves. They have big dreams and he is their only hope for a future with no poverty.
You would never guess his problems by looking at him, as he is always smiling and making funny jokes. His class teacher describes him as a very confident boy not easily swayed by others’ opinions, talkative, and very active in and out of class. He is a sweet boy who is loved by both students and staff. He is hard-working and hopes to become an electrical engineer when he grows up. In his free time, he likes to play football and run with his friends.

Elia’s father is called to be a pastor in a rather resistant, religiously infused area. He has devoted the last few years to building and spreading the word of God in that area, where he has had to battle lawsuits, discrimination, and all kinds of resistance from the community against the church. New Life Foundation took Elia, and his twin brother, Elisha, into the sponsorship program to alleviate the financial burden on his father as he pursues his calling

John initially comes off as a shy student, especially around strangers. He will be the one observing an incident from a distance while everyone is crowding around it. But get used to him and you’ll realize that he’s quite a charming little boy – popular among his peers for making stories and playing with marbles. His personality makes him a popular child among his teachers and matrons, who admire his cool demeanor. John dreams of becoming a doctor in the future, and we can attest – he does have a bright future!
Unfortunately, John comes from a troubled background as a child. For the last few years, he has been raised by his grandparents in the Machame area, a popular Chagga settlement area along the slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro. His grandparents are too old to involve themselves effectively in income-generating jobs, they tend a few livestock at home and their small plot. John’s aunt who lives about an hour away from his grandparent drops by once in while with supplies.
John only knows that his parents moved out to another area when he was a child – he doesn’t have any recent memory of them. John lives with six other children at his grandparents’ house, 3 of whom are his siblings.

Jumanne (which means “Tuesday” in English), is a cool, quiet, uneventful young boy – like Tuesday. He is the kind you’d leave behind to look after a toddler when you have to take the trash out real quick – or rush to the grocery. He is responsible, organized, and always presentable.
Jumanne lives with his elderly grandparents on the outskirts of Moshi town, about a 40-minute drive from the school. His parents had sought the shelter of the elderly couple as they couldn’t afford to have it due to their economy and schedule. Jumanne is one of the seven children residing at his grandparent’s house who work on their small plot beside the house to support their grandchildren. He arrived at the New Life Foundation earlier in 2022. He enjoys skipping rope with friends after class and aspires to become a doctor in the future.

“Joy” is the one word that we would use to describe Kesiah. She is a charming little girl, always treating you to a tender smile and a wave of hand. Her class teacher describes her as a relatable member of the class, with joyous engagement throughout the class adding so much energy and fun.
Kesiah is the fourth child in a family of 8 children. Her parents couldn’t outright afford any education for her; they don’t have formal education they barely make enough to support the family by picking up day jobs around their village. Kesiah’s future was looking very bleak with the possibility of an early marriage with little or no education at all. It has been an absolute JOY having her around and we can’t wait to see all that God has in store for her!
